UNIT: Basic Yoga

LESSON #1
THEME: Introductory poses
EQUIPMENT: Yoga mats.

Introductory Activities
(10 mintues)
1. Brainstorm about yoga (what they know, what they would like to know etc)
2. Introduce proper set up of equipment
3.Discuss basic safety instructions.
1) Teacher gives students some hints such as : stretching, weird positions, strength, and not religious etc.
2) Yoga mats need to be spaced out so that students are able to walk in between them. Students must also able to easily see the teacher.
3)Students need to be aware their own body limits. Yoga should not be painful or stressful. Listening to the teacher is crucial for performing poses with proper form and care.
 Skill Development/Concept 
(25 minutes)
4. Learn Tadasana, Vrksasana and Dandasana (command and practice style)  Tadasana cues:
  • Feet together with toes spread.
  • Chest high and shoulders back
  • Tailbone down.
Vrksasana cues:
  • Firm base with toes spread.
  • Press knee back so that it is in line with right hip.
  • Palms are joined without bending elbows.
Dandasana cues:
  • Chest high and shoulders back.
  • Back straight while lengthening spine.
  • Legs active and feet flexed.
Culminating Activity
(5 minutes)
5. Savasana
6. Namaste
Savasana cues:
  • Palms facing upward.
  • Complete relaxation of all body parts.
  • Relaxed and controlled breathing.
Namaste cues:
  • Legs crossed
  • Arms in prayer position at collarbone.
  • Reply the phrase " Namaste" back to teacher.
 Closure  7. Give students 5-10 minutes to note poses in learning log. May use learning log outline or notebook paper
 Evaluation  8. Teacher evaluates levels of understanding of poses taught during this lesson. Alterations for future use and next days lesson can now be made. As students are completing the day's learing log the teacher will be circulating to get a general idea of comprehension and what needs improved upon.

1) Yoga mats need to be spaced out so that students are able to walk in between them and also able to easily see the teacher.

Tadasana cues:

  • Feet together with toes spread.
  • Chest high and shoulders back
  • Tailbone down.
Vrksasana cues:
  • Firm base with toes spread.
  • Press knee back so that it is in line with right hip.
  • Palms are joined without bending elbows.
     
 Skill Development/Concept  5. Learn Utthita Trikonasana, Adho Mukha Svanasana (command and practice style)

7. Learn Baddhakonasana (command style)
 Utthita Trikonasana cues:
  • Feet facing forward approximately 4 feet apart.
  • Left foot turned  at 90 degrees and right foor turned  at 15 degrees.
  • Keep shoulders back.
Adho Mukha Svanasana:
  • Feet shoulder width apart and legs straight.
  • Arms on ground infront of head  so that body makes a " V" shape.
  • Lift shoulders and stretch trunk upwards.
 Dandasana cues:
  • Chest high and shoulders back.
  • Back straight while lengthening spine.
  • Legs active and feet flexed.
 Baddhakonasana cues:
  • Feet together pulled as close to body as possible.
  • Back straight with chest up and out.
  • Stretch thighs down towards ground.
Culminating Activity 9. Savasana
10. Namaste
Savasana cues:
  • Palms facing upward.
  • Complete relaxation of all body parts.
  • Relaxed and controlled breathing.
Namaste cues:
  • Legs crossed
  • Arms in prayer position at collerbone.
